The Prints

I capture images with the intent of making fine prints, nothing else. My goal is not to capture hundreds or even thousands of images but to capture a few great images to offer you each year. At present I do not offer stock photography. I take special care to capture vibrant colors and innovative images to provide you with a fine art print that will evoke pleasure for many years. Composite images may be used for increased tonal range and for panoramics, but nothing is added to the image that wasn't there at capture. (For instance, I do not add things such as zebras running across the meadows of Tennessee.) If there is significant alteration of content beyond clean up, it will be noted in the description.

Capture

Capture is made either on 35 mm film, 645 film, or digital.

Processing

Film, not currently used, was developed at professional laboratories and then scanned in house on a high resolution scanner. The image is then optimized for color, contrast, as well as defect cleanup.

All digital image processing is done on color calibrated equipment. Images are optimized and composited in Photo shop, a difficult tool to master. The black and white points are set, color casts corrected, contrast adjusted and high dynamic range images and panoramics composited. The image is further optimized by utilizing techniques similar to the traditional darkroom such as dodging and burning. The key is to recognize the limitations of the camera when making captures and making multiple captures in the field to ensure a beautiful fine art print true to the scene I witnessed. A proof print is then made to ensure "all is well" and a master file is then written to an archival CD as well as a backup copy made.

Printing

The printers used allow a wide selection of papers that compliment the print. These include canvas, premium luster, fine art papers, and archival matte. Unless noted, all Signature and Limited Edition prints are printed on fine art paper. The prints are beautiful with a look and feel more like a fine watercolor painting than a photograph. I am able to priduce prints up to 10 or more feet long. If you have special requests or crops, please contact me.

Why print in-house?

It takes a third party out of the print process. For the first time in many years, color photographers are now able to do the printing process without exposure to hazardous chemicals. I have a vision of how the capture should look on paper, and by printing in-house, I can ensure that the print faithfully captures my concept. Have you ever had prints come back with unexpected colors or crops? Well, the same issues exist for me. While there are many excellent print houses out there, printing in-house allows me to control the time, cost, and, most importantly, the quality. I am able to produce very large prints.
